Ingredients
For the Dough
- 1 cup active sourdough starter
- 1 cup warm whole milk
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 6 tbsp unsalted butter softened
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cocoa powder
For the Filling
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 4 tbsp butter melted
For the Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp heavy cream
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter, warm milk, sugar, softened butter, egg, salt, flour, and cocoa powder.
- Knead for 8–10 minutes by hand or 5 minutes in a mixer until the dough becomes smooth and slightly tacky.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let it rise overnight at room temperature.
- The next morning, roll the dough into a 12×18-inch rectangle on a floured surface.
- Brush the dough with melted butter, then sprinkle evenly with brown sugar and chocolate chips.
- Roll the dough tightly from the long side to form a log.
- Slice into 12 equal rolls using a sharp knife or dental floss.
- Arrange the rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, cover, and let them rise for 1–2 hours until puffy.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake the rolls for 25–30 minutes, or until they are puffed and fully baked.
- Let the rolls cool slightly before adding the glaze.
- In a small bowl, whisk powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla until smooth.
- Drizzle the glaze over the warm rolls and serve immediately.
- Optional: Add extra chocolate chips or a dusting of cocoa powder before serving.
